Applications

  1. Organic Synthesis:
Sodium Peroxide (Na₂O₂) is widely used as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis. It helps in the oxidation of various organic compounds, playing a crucial role in reactions that require oxygen transfer.
  2. Oxidation Reactions:
It is employed in various oxidation processes, including the conversion of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones. Sodium Peroxide serves as an effective reagent for these applications under controlled conditions.
  3. Bleaching Agent:
Sodium Peroxide is used in the bleaching of textiles, pulp, and paper industries, where it helps in the removal of color from materials.
  4. Disinfection:
Its strong oxidizing properties make it effective in disinfection processes, especially in water treatment plants and wastewater treatment systems.
  5. Wastewater Treatment:
Sodium Peroxide is utilized in environmental applications to treat industrial wastewater, particularly in neutralizing pollutants and organic contaminants.
  6. Synthesis of Peroxides:
It can be used as a precursor in the synthesis of other peroxides, contributing to various chemical processes.

Preparation

  1. Preparation from Sodium Hydroxide and Oxygen:
The most common method to prepare Sodium Peroxide involves the reaction of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with oxygen (O₂) under high temperatures. The reaction is as follows:
    2NaOH + O₂ → Na₂O₂ + H₂O₂
  2. Alternative Method Using Sodium Metal:
Sodium Peroxide can also be synthesized by reacting sodium metal (Na) with oxygen (O₂) at high temperatures, typically around 300-500°C. The reaction produces sodium peroxide and releases heat:
    2Na + O₂ → Na₂O₂
  3. Purification:
After synthesis, Sodium Peroxide is usually purified by dissolving it in water and separating any unreacted sodium metal or other impurities. The product is then dried under reduced pressure to obtain a pure form of Sodium Peroxide.
  4. Handling and Storage:
Sodium Peroxide should be stored in tightly sealed containers, away from moisture and incompatible substances like acids or reducing agents. It must be kept in a cool, dry place and handled carefully as it is a strong oxidizer.
